Dolphin Watch App information

Dolphin Watch has taken a leap forward! The Dolphin Watch smartphone App enables trained volunteers to instantly share observations of Perth’s Swan Canning Riverpark dolphins onto a global database, and has the potential to be used in a much broader area.

The App allows Dolphin Watch volunteers to share dolphin sightings, photos and videos with scientists studying the animals

Simplifying the data collection process, the updates in this version of the app significantly improves the quality and flow of information.  It helps researchers track dolphin movements, identify individual animals, determine key behaviour patterns and provide an early warning system for dolphin entanglements.

The Dolphin Watch App is a software program that allows trained Dolphin Watch volunteers to upload dolphin sightings to the River Guardians Dolphin Watch database.

The Dolphin Watch App is an easy-to-use smartphone app designed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to record sightings of the resident Swan and Canning River dolphins. The App was specifically designed for people who are trained Dolphin Watchers to be able to perform timed surveys of the rivers and contribute that information to scientific research.

The App automatically takes note of the time and location (GPS) of dolphin sightings before uploading that data to the Dolphin Watch database. Dolphin Watch surveys that are undertaken using the  App are delivered to a database where they are merged with data entered through the  online monitoring form. The data is used for  a range of research by the organization and its partners.

This app was developed by Gaia Resources with input from the River Guardians program and volunteers.
